Wolfpack Completes First Day at CofC Halloween Challenge

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - The NC State women's tennis team wrapped up play on day one of the College of Charleston Halloween Challenge at the College of Charleston Tennis Center in Mount Pleasant, S.C. State claimed victory in three matches on the day, including two doubles wins and one singles victory.
In one doubles match, the Wolfpack freshman pair of Natalia Janowicz and Liza Fieldsend defeated College of Charleston's Brooke McAmis and Katherine Schofield by the score of 8-5 to earn State's first win of the tournament. In the other doubles event, Christy Sipes and Taylor Zaytoun were victorious over the pair of Michelle Garpenlov of Denver and Anne Gulsrud of Marshall, 8-2.
State sophomore Rachael James-Baker defeated Kai Broomfield of Marshall in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, to earn the Wolfpack's only win in singles play. NC State faced very stout competition in the afternoon singles matches as Christy Sipes took on No. 3 ranked Lilly Kimbell of Georgia, Liza Fieldsend played No. 14 Maho Kowase from Georgia and Sophie Nelson matched up with No. 101 Kate Fuller, also from Georgia. All three ended up losing in straight sets to their opponents from Georgia.
Day two will begin tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. instead of 10:00 a.m. due to expected inclement weather.
