FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The NC State rifle team completed action at the E. F. Horton Range in Alaska on Saturday, with a match against the host Alaska Nanooks after facing the Ole Miss Rebels on Friday. The Wolfpack dropped Friday’s contest against the Rebels, 4614-4570, and came up short versus the Nanooks on Saturday, 4677-4594.
“Overall, a few rough spots, but some bright ones too,” said head coach Keith Miller. “Individually and as a team, we definitely identified a few things to work on before our next match.”
Freshman Lucas Kozeniesky led the Wolfpack (3-2, 0-1 GARC) in the air rifle competition on Friday, firing a match-high score of 587. Sophomore Alex Martin registered the third-best total in the match and second-highest for the Pack with a 580. Madeline Pike, a senior from Centreville, Va., charted a 570, while Daniel Cliff and Amy Roderer rounded out the scoring for State, both with scores of 567. Martin and Roderer each set personal records with their scores in the competition.
Martin paced the squad in smallbore, tallying a 572 and Kozeniesky posted the next-best score with a 567. Cliff shot a 564, while Roderer and Pike fired scores of 563 and 558, respectively.
“Lucas [Kozeniesky] did a great job,” said Miller. “He managed a 567 in smallbore after working through some external problems that delayed his start and followed with a very strong air rifle score. Alex [Martin] hit the 580 level for the first time in his career and Amy [Roderer] improved her personal-best in smallbore five points, so we’re excited about their progress.”
Ole Miss (1-1, 1-1 GARC) recorded a team score of 2329 in the air rifle, topping NC State’s total of 2304. In smallbore, the Rebels shot a 2285 and the Wolfpack fired a 2266.
Against Alaska (1-0), NC State shot a 4594 as team, but the host Nanooks bested the Pack’s tally with a 4677. State totaled a 2309 in air rifle and a 2285 in smallbore, while Alaska registered a 2359 and 2318.
Kozeniesky led all shooters with a score of 583 in the smallbore competition. Pike charted the next-highest score for the Pack with a 572 and Martin followed with a 567. Cliff and Roderer also competed in the event, recording scores of 563 and 569, respectively.
In air rifle, Cliff paced the team with a 585. Martin fired a 576 and was trailed closely by Pike and Roderer, who each recorded scores of 574. Kozeniesky rounded out the lineup for the Pack in the event and fired a 573.
NC State will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when it travels to The Citadel for the South Eastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) match three.
