Raleigh, N.C. -
All summer, red-shirt sophomore running back Tony Creecy is going to allow GoPack.com to have an inside look into his mental and physical preparations for the upcoming season, his thoughts on the team, and what he's doing when he's not in class or in the Murphy Center.
Tuesday was Tony's 20th birthday. Although he's got big plans to celebrate this weekend, he spent the day doing what he always does: going to class, going to study hall, and getting ready for the season.
Every year we have a cookout to celebrate my and my friend's birthdays. Every year about 300 or 400 people show up. We provide the food, but it's first come, first serve. Everybody doesn't get to eat, because it's hard to feed that many people. We have a big water fight, a lot of people come to the park and have fun. The first year we had it at my house and my dad said we would never do that again. We thought it would be a good crowd, but about 300 people showed up! I know most of the people who come, but there are some friends of friends who show up.
I came back to Raleigh on Sunday night and started summer school. I feel rested, but I didn't really want to take any time off. That's all I need is time off to pick up weight! When I was home I worked out, but I still relaxed a lot. I did enough to stay in shape, which wasn't easy because my stepmom or my dad cooks a big meal every night. I would wake up at 7 a.m. every morning and do the workout that Coach Ed [Corey Edmond] gave us and then around 12 p.m. would do an hour of footwork and later in the afternoon I would do seven-on-seven with friends from other schools.
I'm only taking one class this session. I'm actually on track to graduate early, so I only have to take one class. I go to class, then go to study hall and then try to work out. Then the rest of the day is all mine. I try to do some pushups and some good stretching. Yesterday the quarterbacks and wide receivers started throwing and catching and the running backs will start this week. The new players will be here second session and that's when it will really pick up. I remember when I first came to school, I started on June 28, so it will be around then. I'm going to try to get some pictures of some of our workouts to post here.
When I'm done for the day, I just relax. I like having some time, but I'm so ready to play. I'm ready to see the results of all the hard work. A lot of players look better, we look great as a team and a lot of players are coming in just to work out. It's going to be crazy after two more months! I felt we all did so much better this spring. I was more explosive, the line was blocking better, the quarterbacks looked good. In another two months we're going to be even better. I wake up in the morning thinking about football. Every morning, I wake up to this on my alarm: "Blessed to see another day" - That's what I use to motivate me every single morning. It's always a blessing to see another day, and this [RIP MOM] reminds me of my Mom because she is my motivator. Losing her has made me appreciate so much. My dad does so much for me and my sister and my family that I want to give everything back to him.
I really love football. I've been doing it since I was five or six years old. I don't really know WHY I love it so much. I guess it's just the fact that it's like, free. I don't have my cell phone, I don't have school, I don't have anybody to worry about. And I love winning! When we're winning I get a whole other energy. When we lose I go into a hole and start thinking about what I can do better. I just want to do everything I can do right now to make sure we can win.
