GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State's Anthony Tzamtzis earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors, announced Monday by the conference office, for his sterling performance in the Wolfpack's Friday night win over Duke.
Tzamtzis (5-3) struck out a career-high nine batters over a career-long 7 2/3 innings in only his fifth start of the year, holding Duke to two hits and outdueling Blue Devil ace Marcus Stroman to propel the Pack to a 4-0 win on Friday.
The redshirt sophomore from Miami, Fla., walked five batters in the shutout effort, but did not let a runner past second base on the evening. His nine batters fanned beats his previous career-best of eight, set in his first start of 2012 against Wright State.
The win in Friday night’s opener helped key the Wolfpack to a series sweep, allowed them to maintain their hold on second place in the ACC’s Atlantic Division, and contributed to the 2012 squad becoming the fastest in State history to reach 16 conference wins.
Tzamtzis marks the third player from NC State in as many weeks, to capture an ACC weekly award. Carlos Rodon took Pitcher of the Week on April 23, and Trea Turner claimed Player of the Week on April 16.
Chris Diaz's Player of the Week win on March 12 gives the Pack four on the season, tying Clemson for most weekly honors this year.
