Maurice “Johnny” Johnson of Marshall, Minn., was the first NC State College basketball player to earn All-America honors … A starting guard on the Red Terrors’ first Southern Conference championship team in 1929, Johnson was also the starting quarterback for the Wolfpack football team … He was named basketball team captain in 1930 and was placed on the Les Gage All-America team for his work on the hardwoods … In 1931, he was the recipient of the Norris Athletic Trophy as NC State’s best all-around athlete … After graduation, Johnson moved to Monrovia, Liberia, to work for the Firestone Rubber Company … After Navy service in World War II, he spent more than two decades in California … He died on Sept. 16, 1969, in Leandro, Calif.
