BATON ROUGE, LA. - No. 23 NC State made a Sunday charge up the leaderboard by tying for the second-best team round of the day with a 5-over 293, led by Augusta James's 2-under 70 to claim a share of fifth place overall of 14 teams at the LSU Golf Classic.
The Wolfpack saved its best for the final round, firing its best team total of the tournament by 15 shots with a 293 to wrap up fifth place alone. The Pack bounced back magnificently from a disastrous 30-over 318 on Saturday to beat No. 27 Purdue, No. 29 Virginia, No. 32 TCU, and No. 38 Kentucky. State's top-five finish brings its total to five top-fives in seven tournaments this year.
After a second round 77, James did the same, leading NC State with her 70 to jump nine spots into a tie for fifth. The 70 marks James's fifth-best single round score of her freshman season, one shy of the four 69s she's posted on the year.
Her fifth place finish represents her third-best of the season, behind a tie for second at the Tar Heel Invitational and a fourth at the Cardinal Cup, both in the fall. James's 4-over 220 fell six shots short of Tennessee's Erica Popson and UNC's Catherine O'Donnell who shared medalist honors. James scores wins over 16 players ranked in the Golfstat top-100, seven ranked inside the top-50.
Ana Menendez backed up James with the Pack's second-best score of the day and her best of the spring, an even-par 72 to move up 21 spots to 27th. Brittany Marchand added a 3-over 75 to tie Menendez for 27th. Vivian Tsui finished 56th with her final round 76.
NC State returns to the links on March 19 for two days at the Pinehurst Challenge in Pinehurst, N.C.
