RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State opens the ACC portion of its schedule when it hosts Maryland on Sunday at the RBC Center. Gametime is 6 p.m. As of Friday, fewer than 500 tickets remained for the game. The contest can be heard on the NC State Radio Network and will be broadcast on ESPNU. Sunday's game has also been designated as Military Appreciation Night with several salutes to the men and women of the U.S. military.
Both teams come into Sunday's game riding winning streaks with the Wolfpack victorious in its last five games, while the Terps have won their last seven.
The Pack is 5-3 in ACC openers against the Terps and 3-2 in league opening games at home.
The Wolfpack is looking to snap a nine-game losing streak to the Terps which dates back to the 2006-07 season. NC State's last win in the series came on Feb. 7, 2006.
TRANSITION POINTS
• Sunday's game is the ACC opener for both teams.
• The Maryland game has been designated Military Appreciation Night by the NCSU Athletics Department.
• NCSU is 32-26 all-time in conference openers and 18-8 in home league openers.
• For the second straight year the Pack will open conference play at home, the first time since 1994-95.
• NC State coach Mark Gottfried has never coached against Maryland.
• Gottfried is the second State coach to open his ACC career against Maryland. The other was Jim Valvano, who lost to the Terps, 82-75, in 1981.
• Since the formation of the ACC, the only NC State coach to win his league debut was Les Robinson. He guided the Pack to a 74-70 victory over Clemson in 1991.
• Richard Howell notched his fourth consecutive double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds versus Delaware State. No Pack player has had five straight since Kenny Carr in 1976-77.
• Howell is averaging 13.8 points per game and 13.8 rebounds per contest during his double-double streak.
• NC State's offensive production (77.3 ppg) trails only UNC and Duke among ACC teams. It owns the conference's top free throw percentage (.752).
• During its current five-game winning streak, the Pack is shooting 49 percent (144-of-295) from the field, 86 percent (81-of-94) from the line and 40 percent (33-of-82) from 3-point range.
• The Pack is only ACC program with five players listed among league's scoring leaders.
• Scott Wood is 31-of-31 from the line this year and has hit 41 straight dating back to last year.
• The Pack's strength of schedule is 36th according to Collegerpi.com (as of 1/6/12) and its NCAA RPI is 49th.
