Eric Surkamp’s major league debut was a success. The former NC State lefthander (2006-08) started for the San Francisco Giants this past Saturday and limited the Houston Astros to a run on six hits in six innings of work.
Following the game, the Giants optioned Surkamp to their Class A San Jose affiliate, but this was merely to give him a start between now and his next start for the big league team, which will be Tuesday, Sept. 6, at San Diego. Because the big league team won’t need him until then, Surkamp was optioned to San Jose to take his normal turn for San Jose on Thursday at Bakersfield. The Giants will recall him to San Francisco following that start. Major league rosters can be expanded to 40 on Sept. 1.
