RALEIGH, N.C. - Rising sophomore Brittany Marchand of the NC State women's golf team has qualified to play in the 2011 U.S. Women's Open in early July. This year's U.S. Open will be July 7-10, at The Broadmoor East Course in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Marchand was in action yesterday at the Crestview Country Club in Agawam, Mass. She shot a 148 for the two rounds, and was one of seven golfers from that qualifier to earn a spot in the U.S. Open field.
"This is a great accomplishment for Brittany, we are all very excited for her," said NC State head coach Page Marsh. "We had such a young team this past season, but Brittany was always one of our most consistent golfers. This will be a great experience for her."
During her freshman campaign Marchand competed in all nine tournaments for NC State, and won medalist honors during the fall season at the UNCG Starmount Classic. Marchand was also a leader for the Wolfpack in the classroom, finishing with a 3.8 GPA in chemical engineering her freshman year.
Last week, former Pack golfer Lauren Doughtie (2006-09) also qualified for the 2011 U.S. Women's Open, shooting a 145 at Sanford's Carolina Trace Country Club.
Also last weekend, incoming freshman Vivian Tsui (Markham, Ontario) narrowly missed a spot in the field. Tsui was in action at the Indiana Country Club in Indiana, Pa., and finished as the second alternate, finishing just one stroke out of a playoff for one of two spots from that qualifier.
