HELP PICK NORTH CAROLINA'S GREATEST SPORTS MOMENT!
The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame wants you to vote in a new program called Great Moments in North Carolina Sports History. They began with nearly two dozen Great Moments (you can find them listed at www.ncshof.org) and asked approximately 100 North Carolinians, including members of the Hall of Fame, to reduce the list to just five.
Now it's up to you! Please pick the historic occasion you think is the most significant Greatest Moment ever in North Carolina sports.
- May 8, 1953: The Atlantic Coast Conference was voted into existence with seven charter members (NC State, Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Wake Forest).
- March 23, 1957: North Carolina defeated Kansas, 54-53 in triple overtime, to win the NCAA basketball championship with a 32-0 record.
- February 10, 1962: North Carolina's Jim Beatty became the first man in the world to break the 4-minute indoor mile (3:58.9).
- March 9, 1974: No. 1-ranked NC State defeated Maryland, 103-100 in overtime, in "the greatest college basketball game ever played" to win the ACC title and earn a NCAA Tournament berth.
- April 4, 1983: In what some regard as the biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history, NC State beat Houston, 54-52, for the national title.
