2010 ACC Legend: Ted Brown
Brown's NC State resume
RALEIGH, N.C. – “Touchdown” Ted Brown is in the running for college football’s highest honor.
The former first-team All-America running back for the Wolfpack, who remains the ACC’s all-time leading rusher more than three decades after his final carry, is one of 17 first-time candidates for the National Football Foundation’s Football Bowl Subdivision College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2011.
Brown, the only four-time first-team All-ACC selection in league history, rushed for 4,602 yards, scored 49 rushing touchdowns and had 27 games with more than 100 rushing yards, all of which still stand as ACC records. He gained an additional 399 yards rushing in three bowl games, making him one of three players in college football history to rush for more than 5,000 career yards.
Brown was a consensus first-team All-America selection in 1978 as a senior and was sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting, after rushing for 1,350 yards and 11 touchdowns in his final season.
This year’s ballot includes 79 former players, all of who were selected as first-team All-Americans, and nine former coaches. The announcement of this year’s FBS class will be made live from New York in May (a specific time and date will be announced later).
Writing letters of recommendation on his behalf were NC State athletics director Debbie Yow, a member of the NFF Board of the Directors; NC State teammate Bill Cowher, who guided the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Super Bowl Championship; former coach Lou Holtz, a 2008 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame; and former University of North Carolina head coach Bill Dooley, the executive director of the Triangle East Chapter of the NFF.
“As a linebacker, I had the unenviable job every day in practice to try to tackle one of the nation’s best college football players, and I know first-hand how difficult it must have been for our opponents to slow him down on game days, both as a runner and a receiver,” Cowher wrote in his letter. “With Ted on our team, the defense always knew there would be enough points on the scoreboard.”
A total of seven former NC State players and coaches have been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame, most recently defensive tackle Dennis Byrd (2010). Others associated with the school are players Roman Gabriel, Jim Richter, Jack McDowall and Jim Donnan former coaches Holtz and Buck Shaw.
"It's an enormous honor to just be on the ballot when you think that more than 4.79 million people have played college football," said NFF President & CEO Steven J. Hatchell. "The Hall's requirement of being a first-team All-American creates a much smaller pool of only 1,900 individuals who are even eligible to be on the ballot, so being in today's group of 79 names means an individual is truly among the greatest to ever have played the game, and we are proud to announce their names today."
The ballot was mailed this week to the more than 12,000 NFF members and current Hall of Famers whose votes will be tabulated and submitted to the NFF's Honors Court, which deliberates and selects the class. Chaired by Gene Corrigan, a former ACC Commissioner and NCAA president, the 13-member NFF Honors Court includes an elite and geographically diverse pool of athletics directors, conference commissioners, Hall of Famers and members of the media.
