GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State senior Tracy Smith came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points Thursday night in the first round of the 58th ACC Men's Basketball Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum, but was unable to lead his team over Maryland.
The Terps started quickly in the 75-67 victory, but the Wolfpack (15-16 overall) stayed in the game by creating 17 turnovers in the contest and using a full-court press late in the second half.
Head coach Sidney Lowe's team was hampered the entire game with its shooting, as it made just 27 of its 80 shots from the field and only two of its 17 3-point attempts.
"We hurt ourselves with shot selection, and we missed a lot of shots," Lowe said. "We missed a lot of lay-ups and open looks.
"But I was proud of the way our guys hung in there. We just missed our open shots."
The Terps (19-13), coming off a three-game losing streak, weren't significantly better, making just 44.8 percent of their shots, but managed to string together several scoring runs that kept them comfortably in the lead throughout.
"We had a tough week last week," Maryland coach Gary Williams said. "A lot of things happened that weren't good and we were tough enough to come into practice and work on some things that we thought we needed to get ready for tonight's game.
"To NC State's credit, they came out and didn't go away."
Maryland took a 12-2 lead to start the game, and led 31-14 after Maryland went on a 13-0 run midway through the half. But freshman Ryan Harrow sparked the team by scoring six points in a 15-4 run that cut Maryland's lead to 35-29 with just over two minutes to play in the first half.
The Terps took a 42-33 lead into halftime.
The Wolfpack, which shot 33.8 percent from the field for the night, made a run in the final five minutes, twice cutting Maryland's lead to six points in the final minute of the game. But it was unable to cut further into that lead.
Sophomore Jordan Vandenberg replaced Smith in the starting lineup, along with fellow sophomore Scott Wood and freshmen Harrow, C.J. Leslie and Lorenzo Brown. Harrow added 12 points for the Pack, while senior Javi Gonzalez came off the bench to score 10.
"Our shot selection was kind of messed up," Smith said. "We had a couple of turnovers that were key in the game that really hurt us."
Maryland was led by Williams' 16 points, followed by Dino Gregory with 11.
