CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Javier Gonzalez scored 16 points and Tracy Smith added 10 more as NC State fell at Virginia, 69-58, on Tuesday night.
Mustapha Farrakhan, who put up 15 points for the Cavaliers, nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key with 3:23 left to give Virginia a commanding nine-point lead.
Richard Howell led the Pack with 10 rebounds, and Scott Wood nailed three shots from outside. The Pack out-rebounded the Cavaliers 34-32, and shot better from the floor but could not overcome 15 turnovers.
Will Sherrill hit two three-pointers as the Cavaliers stormed to a 16-0 lead. The Wolfpack (15-14, 5-10) responded with a 17-2 spurt, including seven points from Gonzalez.
Virginia led 32-28 at the break, then opened the second half with a 10-3 run, capped by another Sherrill three.
