NC State Hosts Georgia Tech: NC State returns to home action this weekend, hosting Georgia Tech on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Wolfpack (14-13, 4-9) posts an 8-1 all-time mark against the Yellow Jackets at the RBC Center, and have won 11 of the last 12 in Raleigh.
The Yellow Jackets (11-16, 3-10 ACC) have lost seven of their last eight games, including their last seven ACC contests. The Yellow Jackets are 0-9 on the road this season, with an 0-6 mark in conference games.
This game will be televised on the ACC Network with Steve Martin and Cory Alexander.
Howlin' For Hunger Food Drive to be Held Saturday: Wolfpack fans can help a statewide residential magnet school shatter a Guinness world record by donating canned food during Saturday's NC State-Georgia Tech matchup.
Campus leaders hope to generate 10,000 pounds of non-perishable donations in support of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM), and its plan to collect 550,000 pounds of food over a single 24-hour period on March 5.
Saturday's event is co-sponsored by Student Government`s Community Service Commission and the Hunger & Homelessness Committee of the Service Leadership Team - an extension of NC State's Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service (CSLEPS).
All donations will benefit the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, which provides emergency food for approximately 73,000 residents each week across 34 North Carolina counties.
The Series Versus Georgia Tech: Saturday’s matchup will mark the 87th meeting between NC State and Georgia Tech. The Wolfpack leads the overall series 50-36. NC State has won won nine of the last 14 meetings dating back to the 2002-03 season, but the Yellow Jackets have won five of the last seven.
NC State holds a 28-9 advantage in games played in Raleigh, with an 8-1 edge at the RBC Center. Dating back to the 1996-97 season, the Pack has won 11 of the last 12 games played in Raleigh, with Georgia Tech's only win in that span coming in 2007-08.
Twelve of the last 13 meetings in the series have been decided by 10 points or less.
Last Season Season Versus Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech won a pair of games against the Pack last season, winning in Atlanta and in the ACC Tournament semifinals.
In Atlanta during the regular season, Julius Mays' three-pointer as time expired fell short, as No. 21 Georgia Tech held on for a 73-71 win. The Yellow Jackets held a 69-55 lead with 4:07 before the Pack made the game close. NC State put together a 14-1 run and cut the lead to 70-69 with 2:07 left. Georgia Tech then hit three free throws to go up 73-69 with 35 seconds left. Dennis Horner hit a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left, and NC State forced a tie-up and got the ball back with 15 seconds. Javier Gonzalez missed a jumper, and Mays' final heave fell short.
It was another close game in the ACC Tournament semifinals, Gonzalez's three-pointer in the final seconds fell short, and NC State fell, 57-54. The Yellow Jackets held a 29-19 lead at the half, but the Pack battled back in the second half, and captured the lead at 36-33 at the 14:19 mark thanks to opening the half on a 17-4 run. NC State held the lead until Georgia Tech went up 47-46 with 2:52 to play, and the lead rose to six (52-46) with 1:27 left. An 8-3 Pack run got the score to 55-54 with 13 seconds left, but a pair of Georgia Tech free throws sealed the game before NC State's last miss. Tracy Smith led the Pack with 15 points.
Last Time Out for NC State: With the score tied 50-50 with 10:41 remaining, No. 19 North Carolina went on a decisive 10-2 run and pulled away from the Wolfpack for a 75-63 win at the RBC Center on Wednesday. NC State was up by as many as 10 points in the first half, opening the game 19-9, but the Tar Heels went into the half up 31-29. UNC then extended the lead to 46-37 six minutes into the second half, but NC State responded with a 13-4 run to tie the game with 10 minutes left. C.J. Leslie led the Pack with 13 points, while Tracy Smith had 12 points and Lorenzo Brown finished with 11 points and eight assists.
Georgia on Their Minds: A trio of Wolfpack players will be playing against their hometown team when Georgia Tech comes to town on Saturday. Lorenzo Brown (Centennial High School), Ryan Harrow (Walton High School), and Richard Howell (Wheeler High School) each played their high school basketball in suburbs of Atlanta.
Marietta, Ga., the location of both Walton and Wheeler high schools, is situated exactly 18 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta, whereas Brown's hometown of Roswell sits 18 miles due north and 11 miles east of Marietta.
In addition, Harrow and Georgia Tech sophomore Glen Rice, Jr., both attended Walton High School, where the duo led their squad to the second round of the class 5A state playoffs in 2009.
