RALEIGH, N.C. - Following the NC State football team's Tuesday morning offseason workout, four representatives of the U.S. Marine Reserve Center of Raleigh presented the Wolfpack with a plaque in recognition for the team's contributions to Toys For Tots.
For each of the last four years, NC State has partnered with the local Marines to raise money and new toys for children throughout the Triangle. It has quickly become the charity's largest contributor in the area.
Corporate partner Coca-Cola donated $500 for each of the 41 touchdowns the Wolfpack scored in its first 10 games this season and added another $1,000 for an on-field promotion this year, bringing its total contribution to $21,500. Coke also partnered with Triangle-area Harris Teeter grocery stores to set up nearly 40 collection bins for patrons to bring donations throughout the holiday season.
Finally, at the NC State-Wake Forest football game in November, Wolfpack fans were asked to bring cash and new toy donations to the NC State-Wake Forest football game, contributing more than $24,000 in cash and some 3,000 toys.
In all, the cash contribution of more than $55,000 was some $8,000 more than 2009.
In the last four years, NC State football has contributed more than $150,000 in cash and nearly 20,000 new toys to the Toys For Tots program, which was started by the U.S. Marine Reserves in 1947. O'Brien is a member of the national board of directors for the charity.
