ORLANDO, FLA. - NC State student-athletes Jess Panza and DeShawn Painter earned recognition from the National Consortium for Academics and Sports and the Scholar Baller program as recipients of the 2011 Academic Momentum Award.
Panza landed on the first team, while Painter made the third team. The pair represent two of 49 student-athletes selected from a national pool. The award recognizes student-athletes that show academic improvement and the impact each individual had on his or her classmates, teammates, advisors, and professors.
Established in 1985, the overall mission of the NCAS is "to create a better society by focusing on educational attainment and using the power appeal of sport to positively affect social change".
The Scholar Baller movement has evolved since 1995 in response to concerns that the student-athlete's athletics role increasingly superseded the student role.
Each award recipient will receive a recognition certificate, medal, and a ThinkMan or ThinkWoman decal.
