RALEIGH, N.C. -- More than 100 former players, coaches and support personnel attended Sunday's 100-year anniversary reunion brunch at the RBC Center's Varsity Club. They were later recognized at halftime of NC State's 72-70 victory over Miami.
A broad range of former players, at least four of which played when the teams were still known as the Red Terrors, attended the day-long celebration, including the program's two all-time leading scorers, David Thompson and Rodney Monroe.
Both the 1974 and 1983 NCAA championship teams were well-represented, as were five former ACC Tournament MVP award-winners: Vic Molodet (1956), Lou Pucillo (1959), Larry Worsley (1965), Vann Williford and Tommy Burleson (1973, '74).
But the unsung veterans, those whose efforts were the foundation of NC State's hardwood success, greatly outnumbered the superstars, including 86-year-old Fred Swartzberg and 84-year-old Richard Jackson, who both played at NC State before World War II and before the arrival of Everett Case.
Joe Harand, the last surviving member of Case's first recruiting class and former roommate of Norm Sloan, was a popular addition to the event, along with his wife Nell, who wore a necklace that featured a medallion from the first Dixie Classic in 1949.
All generations of NC State basketball were represented and celebrated with a 22-minute video produced by former basketball manager Tor Ramsey.
