Charlottesville, Va. -
Newcomer Sanaa Bhambri continued her perfect record, advancing to the finals of the A Singles bracket and the A Doubles bracket, alongside junior Sandhya Nagaraj at the UVa Fall Invitational Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.
“All the girls played well, we had a good day overall I thought,” said NC State head coach Hans Olsen. “They made a good improvement from yesterday to today. They competed a notch up from yesterday. Everyone had a good energy and a good bounce to their step.”
Bhambri topped Virginia’s Emily Fraser 6-1, 6-3 in singles play and teamed with Nagaraj to earn a pair of victories over Wake Forest’s Pavelec/Duncan and Virginia’s Fraser/Tomljanovic duos, 8-4 and 9-7 in doubles.
“Getting the winning habit early for both of them is really important,” said Olsen. “They’re setting the tone early for a lot of success for us this year. It’s really a good way to start for both of them, making it to the finals.”
Bhambri and Nagaraj will vie for the A Doubles title tomorrow at 9 a.m. before Bhambri tries to win the singles championship tomorrow at noon.
Nagaraj picked up a victory in the A Singles fifth place bracket 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Her final match of the tournament is set for 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.
Lenka Hojckova, Christy Sipes, and Tana Illova also picked up wins in their respective singles brackets. The doubles team of Hojckova and Illova also scored two victories for the Wolfpack.
“Tana was matched up against a player she lost to last year in the ACC tournament,” said Olsen, “For her to come back this year and beat her was really something.”
