RALEIGH, NC - NC State held its first scrimmage of 2010 preseason drills on Monday evening, working out for and hour and a half in Carter-Finley Stadium. The teams worked in 12-play sequences, giving a wide variety of players the chance to get work.
"As Coach Bible always says, `Show me what you've learned,'" said head coach Tom O'Brien following the scrimmage. "Our goal was to see what we've learned in our first seven practices. We will evaluate the tape tomorrow and get back on the field Wednesday."
The team combined for 92 rushing yards and 116 passing yards in the workout, posting a 39.8 yard punting average on five kicks and connecting on three of five field goals. O'Brien declined to release any individual statistics.
O'Brien said that although the scrimmage came too early in the practice schedule to be able to make many personnel decisions, he did feel good about the attitude of his team. "There was a lot of enthusiasm and hustle out there," he added.
O'Brien also announced that sophomore defensive back Jesse Riley, who saw action on special teams last season, will miss the upcoming campaign after suffering an ACL injury. He also said that he didn't play linebacker Nate Irving in the scrimmage. "I'm not going to play him until the third scrimmage," he said. "We've got to get him to the first game in great shape and for what we needed to do today, we didn't need him in there."
When asked about the play of the defensive secondary, O'Brien added "They are further along that this time a year ago, but we have to get better moving forward."
