July 22, 2010
(Note: This is the fourth of periodic reports on current NC State players in summer baseball. All stats are through games of July 21.)
July 20 was all-star day for the Northwoods and Coastal Plain leagues, and Harold Riggins, Danny Canela and Terran Senay all played and performed well for their respective leagues.
The following day, July 21, Pratt Maynard was selected as the starting catcher for the East Division team in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game, which will be played Wednesday, July 28 at Boston's Fenway Park. The game will be televised live on the CBS College Sports Network. Check local listings to see if the game will be carried by your local cable or satellite provider.
The Northwoods League and Coastal Plain League both held their respective all-star games this past Tuesday, July 20. In the Northwoods League game, held in Eau Claire, Wisc., Riggins started at first base for the South Division and went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Riggins was one of two players with two hits for the South Division and one of six for the game.
Riggins, a rising junior in his second summer in the Northwoods League, is terrorizing the league's pitchers. He is batting .366 with seven doubles, seven home runs and 23 RBIs in 28 games for the Madison Mallards. Riggins is tied for the league lead in home runs despite missing the first 15 games of the season, and leads the league with a .616 slugging percentage. He is third in batting average. In his last two games before the all-star break, he went 6-for-11 with three doubles, three runs scored and five RBIs.
Danny Canela and Terran Senay, both rising sophomores for the Wolfpack and regulars for the CPL's Forest City Owls, played in the CPL All-Star Game, Canela as the starting catcher for the National All-Stars and Senay as a reserve outfielder for the American All-Stars. Canela went 1-for-3 with a single, and Senay had a single in his only plate appearance.
For the summer, Senay is batting .329 for the Owls, and has seven doubles, one home run and 12 RBIs. He has a .456 on-base percentage thanks to 19 walks in 25 games, and has a .470 slugging percentage. Canela is hitting .267 with eight doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs in 26 games.
Maynard is NC State's first Cape League All-Star since Aaron Bates, Jon Still and Gib Hobson in 2005. Bates was a starter in that game and was the last Wolfpack player chosen to start in the Cape League All-Star Game before Maynard this year. This will be the second year that the game will be played at Fenway Park.
Maynard certainly earned his all-star spot. In addition to batting a solid .268, he has five doubles, two home runs, and 19 RBIs in 28 games. Maynard leads the Cape League with 25 walks, is second with a .439 on-base percentage, and fourth with a .402 slugging percentage. He is 14th in the league in batting.
Other Summer League News
• Outfielder John Gianis has cooled slightly for the Danbury Westerners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, but is still hitting .404 with a .449 on-base percentage and a .468 slugging percentage. Gianis is 0-for-9 in his last two games, but went 7-for-12 in three games prior to that and leads Danbury in batting, slugging and on-base percentage.
• Rising sophomore infielder Chris Diaz had his biggest game of the season July 21 for the Outer Banks Daredevils of the Coastal Plain League. In a 14-7 victory at Petersburg, Diaz went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and five RBIs. Diaz hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning and followed that with a two-run double in the fifth. The five RBIs matched the highest single-game RBI output by an NC State player this summer. Chris Schaeffer, playing for Morehead City, drove in five runs June 21 in an 11-2 win at Wilmington.
• Pitching mostly in middle and late relief for their respective teams, lefthander Nick Rice and righthander Rob Chamra have turned in steady campaigns this summer.
Rice, a rising senior playing with Riggins at Madison in the NWL, is 1-1 with a 1.32 ERA in 13 2/3 innings. Rice has made nine appearances, including one start. He has allowed two earned runs all summer, one in the game he won and one in the game he lost.
Chamra, a rising senior pitching for the Falmouth Commodores in the Cape League, is 1-1 with a 2.94 ERA in 18 1/3 innings. Chamra has made nine appearances, all in relief. Chamra has allowed six earned runs, three each in two outings. Six of his seven other appearances were scoreless.
• Schaeffer is hitting .250 for the Morehead City Marlins and has shown excellent plate discipline, drawing 17 walks in 22 games. He leads Morehead City with a .416 on-base percentage.
