RALEIGH, N.C. – Harold Riggins hit two big flies and drove in four runs, and four NC State pitchers combined on a six-hitter Tuesday evening to lift the Wolfpack past Coppin State 11-2 at Doak Field at Dail Park.
NC State, which improved to 19-10 on the season, won for the fourth time in its last five games and the fifth time in its last seven games. Coppin State lost for just the second time in its last 10 games and fell to 10-13.
Brandon Price (1-0) got the win for NC State with 2 2/3 innings of relief work. He allowed a run on two hits, walked one and struck out one. Vance Williams earned his first save after allowing a run on three hits in 3 1/3 innings. Coppin State starter Jim Vagnier (2-3) was saddled with the loss. He allowed three runs, one earned, on two hits and three walks in two innings of work.
The game featured five errors by Coppin State, nine hit batters (six by Coppin State pitchers), three wild pitches and a passed ball. Three of the errors and the passed ball figured prominently in NC State jumping to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kyle Wilson led off and walked, then took second on the passed ball by CSU catcher Alex Black. Dallas Poulk advanced Wilson to third on a groundout, and scored when second baseman Dan Gleiberman kicked Pratt Maynard’s grounder for an error. Vagnier threw away a pickoff attempt for the second error of the inning, moving Maynard to second base. Maynard took third on Danny Canela’s fly ball to center field and scored on a wild pitch. Riggins singled to left and Terran Senay walked to put runners on first and second with two away, and Matt Bergquist drove in Riggins for the third run of the inning with a single to left.
Consecutive two-out singles in the third by Bergquist, John Gianis, Chris Diaz, and Wilson produced two runs for the Wolfpack, which led 5-0 after three innings. Poulk and Maynard were hit by pitches to start the bottom of the fourth inning, and Canela walked to load the bases. Riggins made it 6-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Eagles got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth. Dwight Robinson drew a one-out walk and took second on a balk. Chris Kashangaki got the run home with a single up the middle.
NC State made it a rout in the bottom of the sixth on two-run homers by Maynard and Riggins, making it a 10-1 game. Riggins added another run with a towering homer to left in the bottom of the eighth, and Coppin State capped the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth on Black’s ground-rule double into the right-field corner, scoring Harry Williams, who led off the inning with a single to left.
NC State and Coppin State will conclude this two-game series on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM and on-line at gopack.com.
