COLLEGE PARK, Md. – NC State hung five crooked numbers on the scoreboard Sunday, scoring three runs or more in five different innings and easily thumping Maryland 22-6 in the final game of a three-game ACC series at Shipley Field.
The victory gave the Wolfpack a sweep of the series and lifted the Pack to 25-13 overall and 9-9 in the ACC. Maryland fell to 14-24 and 4-14.
Freshman righthander Anthony Tzamtzis (3-2) got the win with 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Alex Sogard. Tzamtzis allowed two runs on five hits and walked two. Maryland starter Sander Beck (0-6) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Maryland took its first lead of the series with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Alfredo Rodriguez led off and walked. David Poutier sacrificed him to second, and Sogard moved him to third with a wild pitch. Brandon Padula got the run home with a line single to right field. It could have been worse but for some snazzy defense by second baseman Dallas Poulk. Jack Cleary reached on an infield single, and with both runners off on a hit-and-run by the Terps, Matt Marquis hit a grounder behind Poulk, who was moving to cover second base. Poulk cut back, made a diving stab of the ball and threw out Cleary from the seat of his pants, saving a run. Sogard fanned Jordan Hagel for the final out of the inning.
NC State tied it up with a run in the top of the second. Danny Canela, who had a huge game, lined a single to right and took second base on a wild pitch. Beck walked Harold Riggins, and Andrew Ciencin grounded to third, forcing Riggins at second base. Canela went to third on the play, and with runners on the corners Beck tossed his second wild pitch of the inning, scoring Canela to tie the game at 1-1.
Maryland retook the lead in the bottom of the second and got into the Wolfpack bullpen, another first for the series after complete games by Jake Buchanan and Cory Mazzoni the first two games of the series. Mike Rozak led off the inning and capped a 10-pitch at-bat with a double to left-center. Kevin Tehansky walked. Gerard Taylor bunted, but right back to Sogard, who went to second to retire Tehansky for the first out of the inning. Rodriguez followed with a sacrifice fly to left-center to drive in the go-ahead run. Sogard walked Poutier to put runners on first and second, and that was the end of the line for the Wolfpack lefty, who worked 1 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Tzamtzis came out of the pen and got Padula to hit a weak ground ball to Canela at first base for the final out of the inning.
NC State broke out the heavy lumber starting in the top of the third. With one down in the inning, Dallas Poulk walked and went to second on Pratt Maynard’s single up the middle. Drew Poulk dumped a single into left-center to load the bases with one down, and Canela tied the game with a single to center. Riggins walked to force in a run, and Maryland lefty John Dischert came in to face Ciencin, who delivered the big blow of the inning, a two-run double down the line and into the left-field corner.
The Terrapins answered with a run in the bottom of the third. Jack Cleary led off with a single up the middle and went to third on Jordan Hagel’s one-out double off the wall in center field. Cleary scored on a wild pitch.
Dallas Poulk led off the top of the fourth with a single to left and scored on Canela’s two-out homer to right. Riggins, up next, was hit by a pitch and Ciencin doubled down the left-field line to put runners on second and third. Chris Schaeffer singled to left to drive in Riggins, but Padula’s throw home nailed Ciencin for the final out of the inning, with NC State holding an 8-3 lead.
John Gianis led off the top of the fifth for the Wolfpack and singled to right. Matt Bergquist sacrificed the runner to second base, and Dallas Poulk reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners with one out. Dischert hit Maynard with a pitch to load the bases, and Drew Poulk made it 10-3 with a two-run double off the wall in straightaway center field. Charlie Haslup came on in relief for the Terps and his first order of business was to throw a wild pitch, allowing Maynard to score. One out later, Riggins hit his third homer of the series, a two-run shot to right, giving NC State a 10-run lead at 13-3.
Maryland scored a run in its half of the fifth. Marquis led off with a double to the wall in center field and went to third on Hagel’s single to left. Gary Schneider got the runner home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Wolfpack made it four huge innings in a row with a six-pack in the top of the sixth. Gianis led off and went all the way to second on a throwing error by Poutier at second base. Bergquist doubled down the left-field line to drive in Bergquist, and Dallas Poulk singled to center field to drive in Bergquist. Maynard followed with a majestic two-run homer to right field. The inning continued when Canela drew a one-out walk and Riggins lined a single up the middle to put runners on first and second with one down. Ciencin grounded to Poutier at second base, but his throw to Rodriguez was wide and went into left field, allowing Canela to score and Riggins to advance to third. Schaeffer’s sacrifice fly to center field drove in Riggins to make it 19-4.
Cleary led off the bottom of the seventh and doubled to the wall in left field, then took third when Marquis grounded out to third. Canela’s throw back to third to nail Cleary skipped past Ciencin for an error, allowing Cleary to score and trim the Pack lead to 19-5.
NC State added three final runs when Maynard unloaded a three-run home run, his second bomb of the game, in the top of the ninth. Maryland’s final run came when Marquis doubled home John Wilson with two down in the bottom of the ninth.
NC State will return to action on Wednesday, April 21, at East Carolina. Game time is 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM and on-line at gopack.com.
