RALEIGH, N.C. – Drew Poulk and Chris Diaz had three hits apiece, and four NC State pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout Tuesday night as NC State rolled past NC Central 11-0 at Doak Field at Dail Park.
NC State improved to 22-12 with the win, while NC Central fell to 1-32.
For the second time in as many meetings with the Eagles, the Wolfpack had to wait until the late innings to put the game away. Dallas Poulk led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer off the foul pole in right field, and Central starter Glenn Frye (1-7) retired 10 of the next 14 men he faced before yielding two more runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Diaz and run-scoring groundout by Pratt Maynard.
The score remained 3-0 until Frye finally ran out of gas in the bottom of the seventh and put the first four runners of the inning on base. Diaz led off and reached on a bunt single. Frye hit Dallas Poulk with a pitch and walked Maynard to load the bases. Drew Poulk singled up the middle to drive in one run and drive Frye to the showers. Finally. The Eagles freshman, who has NC Central’s only win of the season, allowed six runs, four earned, on eight hits in six-plus innings of work.
Reliever Douglas Dalley was not nearly as effective. He got started by throwing a wild pitch, allowing Dallas Poulk to score. Then Danny Canela hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Maynard and make it 6-0.
Andrew Ciencin led off the bottom of the eighth and took Dalley deep, homering to left for his sixth of the season. Diaz reached on another infield single, and went all the way to third on Dallas Poulk’s single to left-center. Maynard walked to load the bases, and Drew Poulk drove in a pair with a single up the middle. Canela singled to load the bases again, and Bill Edwards sent two more runs home with a single through the left side of the infield.
Freshman righthander Chris Overman (1-0) started and went three standout innings for the Wolfpack, allowing one hit, a one-out single in the second inning. He faced one batter over the minimum and notched five strikeouts. Mike Russo added 2 2/3 innings, and Vance Williams went 2 1/3. Russo and Williams allowed one hit apiece. Williams struck out six of the eight batters he faced. Mike Clark pitched the ninth and walked the bases loaded with none out before striking out Ross Plummer and getting Kurt Wilson to ground into a game-ending double play.
The shutout was the first by the Wolfpack since a 3-0 whitewashing of North Carolina last May 8.
NC State will return to action on Wednesday at Doak Field at Dail Park in a 6:30 p.m. game vs. UNC Wilmington. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM and on-line at gopack.com.
