RALEIGH, N.C. — Bobby Ward, seeded first at 149 pounds but upset in the first round of the 2010 ACC Wrestling Championships, rallied to win twice in the consolation bracket and take third place Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum.
Ward (25-8) defeated John Burns of North Carolina 6-3, then easily defeated Jon Kohler of Maryland 10-4. Ward will now wait for word of a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in two weeks in Omaha, Neb.
While Ward took third place in the wrestlebacks, freshman 133-pounder Dale Shull, sophomore 141-pounder Scott Norris and freshman heavyweight Eloheim Palma finished fourth. Shull (18-16) lost in the consolation finals to Brock LiVorio of Virginia Tech, 10-8.
Norris, meanwhile, won his consolation semifinal bout from North Carolina’s Mike Rappo when Rappo defaulted because of an elbow injury. In the bout for third, Derek Valenti pinned Norris (4-19) at 6:37.
Palma came the closest to making the NCAA Championships, just missing a takedown at the buzzer that would have won his bout with Virginia’s Jack Danilkowicz, who came away with a 3-2 decision. Palma (23-16) also will await a possible at-large bid next week.
