COLUMBUS, Ga. – NC State got revenge on No. 24 UMass with a 3-1 win on Friday, Feb. 26 at the 2010 NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Wolfpack dropped its season opener to the Minutewomen two weeks ago in Miami.
The win pushes the Pack to 7-5 on the year, while UMass slides to 5-2.
Lindsay Campana (5-1) was simply brilliant again, issuing 11 K’s and scattering just four hits. Bailey Sanders (1-2) took the loss for the Minutewomen.
Stephanie Call led the Pack at the plate with a long ball and two RBIs, while Landon Warren, Claudia Cooper and Alyssa Ishibashi all had base knocks.
The Pack got three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first and held that lead for the rest of play. Warren led off by legging out an infield single, then took second on a passed ball. Lauren Peters followed by pushing Warren to third with a sac-bunt, and Cooper drove Warren in with an RBI single. Call then sent her fifth bomb of the year out of the yard, pushing NC State’s lead to 3-0.
UMass removed Sanders after Call’s long ball, placing Sara Plourde in the circle. She retired the first batter she faced to end the inning, and held NC State to just one more hit the rest of the way.
The Pack’s lead was trimmed to 3-1 in the top of the second as Whitney Williams mashed a double to dead center, and Meghan Carta brought her in to score with an RBI base hit to left-center.
NC State will take on Mississippi State (11 a.m.) and Iowa (4 p.m.) tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 27 on the second day of the 2010 NFCA Leadoff Classic.
