Wrestling Falls Twice

Virginia, ranked No. 24 in the latest NWCA poll, opened things up with a 45-6 victory over the Pack, and 14th-ranked Virginia Tech followed with a 36-9 victory. NC State won one bout in each match, and picked up six points against Virginia Tech by virtue of a forfeit at heavyweight. NC State fell to 6-13 on the season. Virginia and Virginia Tech both improved to 15-5.
In the first match, Virginia the first five matches and won nine of 10 overall, losing on an injury default at 165 pounds. The Wolfpack’s Ray Ward took a 4-1 lead on Pat Riley on a takedown late in the first period. Riley suffered a leg injury on the takedown and was unable to continue.
Virginia won four matches by fall, two by technical fall, and two by major decision.
Virginia Tech did not score nearly as many bonus points, winning three matches by decision and only one by pin. The Hokies still won eight matches. The Wolfpack’s Quinton Godley won a 6-0 decision over Taylor Knapp for three points, and heavyweight Eloheim Palma won by forfeit.
The forfeit counts as a win for Palma, his 20th of the season, which sets a new school record for victories by a freshman heavyweight.
