Wrestling Falls At No. 25 ODU, 34-9

NORFOLK, Va. — Old Dominion won eight of 10 matches Tuesday night, including three major decisions and two technical falls, and rolled past NC State 34-9.
The Monarchs, ranked No. 25 in latest NWCA coaches poll, won for the fifth time in their last seven matches and improved to 9-4-1 overall. The Wolfpack, which got both of its victories in the match from freshmen, lost its fourth consecutive match and dropped to 5-11 on the season.
ODU jumped to a 6-0 lead right out of the chute when seventh-ranked James Nicholson won by forfeit. The Wolfpack tied team score at 6-6, however, thanks to freshman Dale Shull, wrestling for the first time at 133 pounds. Shull took down Justin LaValle nine seconds into the match and maintained the advantage for another 52 seconds before recording the pin.
Old Dominion won the next seven matches, including a 4-2 upset by Brennan Brumley over Bobby Ward, snapping Ward’s personal winning streak at 10 matches. Following a scoreless first period, Ward began the second in the bottom position and took a 2-0 lead on a quick reversal. Brumley escaped moments later and the period ended with Ward on top 2-1. Brumley started the third period on bottom, escaped to tie the score at 2-2, then got the victory on a late takedown with nine seconds left in regulation. Ward dropped to 223-7 overall. He is 17-4 since dropping from 157 pounds to 149.
The Wolfpack’s second victory came from freshman heavyweight Eloheim Palma, who took a 5-1 decision over Grant Chapman. Palma got one takedown early in the first period and another with two seconds left in the second. The fifth point came from a minute-plus of advantage time. Palma, who snapped a four-match personal losing streak, improved to 18-13.
NC State returns to action Wednesday night, February 10 with a 7:30 p.m. bout vs. UNC Greensboro at Reynolds Coliseum.
