RALEIGH, N.C. -- For more than a century, NC State and North Carolina have battled on the football field.
Saturday, at UNC's Kenan Stadium, the two teams meet for the 100th time since their first meeting on Oct. 12, 1894 in the first of two games that season. Kickoff is slated for noon.
Over the years, there have been many memorable moments, many indeliable images from the game. Check out the pictures, carved from athletics department and university archives, from some of a handful games in this sometimes heated series. Every decade the two teams have been is represented here.
Many of the images came from the NCSU Libraries Special Collection Archive, which has a wealth of photographs that have been digitized in recent years. Some came from archives maintained by the athletics department. And some came from photographers, like Peyton Williams, hired to shoot games over the years.
My personal favorite? The 1921 picture of John "Runt" Faucette running around the end to score the only touchdown in NC State's 7-0 victory over the Tar Heels at Riddick Stadium on the Thursday of the State Fair. He literally went into the end zone on a cloud of dust.
