RALEIGH, N.C. -- The official history of the traditions and triumphs of the NC State University men's basketball program, NC STATE BASKETBALL: 100 YEARS OF INNOVATION, will be released today.
Considered one of college basketball's strongest programs, the Wolfpack boasts two national championships, 17 conference championships and three Final Four appearances.
In addition to the numerous accomplishments of the program itself, the authors, Tim Peeler and Roger Winstead, focus particularly on its history of innovation and on the contributions that the NC State men's basketball program has made to the evolution of college basketball as a whole.
The book chronicles former coach Everett Case's distinctive role in bringing big-time college basketball (the Dixie Classic, the Atlantic Coast Conference and the NCAA Regionals) to the Southeast. His efforts helped establish the Atlantic Coast Conference as one of the strongest basketball conferences in the United States.
NC STATE BASKETBALL highlights the many famous basketball traditions begun by the team, which include cutting down the nets after a championship, spotlighting players during introductions and the invention of the alley-oop.
The Wolfpack's basketball program was a pacesetter for innovations in the game. The men's team was among the first to employ coast-to-coast recruiting tactics and played in the first nationally televised basketball game.
The book profiles the numerous players and coaches whose names are etched into the history of the game: visionary coaches like Gus Tebell, Everett Case, Norm Sloan, Jim Valvano and great players like David Thompson and Ronnie Shavlik.
NC STATE BASKETBALL follows the history of the team's nicknames (before it was the "Wolfpack"), the evolution of the basketball uniform, and the expansion of the university's basketball program overall.
Current NC State head basketball coach Sidney Lowe contributed the foreword. Wolfpack fans and college basketball lovers alike will revel in this volume featuring over 230 action-packed, color photographs that bring the history of this program to life.
Tim Peeler is the managing editor of GoPack.com, NC State's official athletics department website. He has worked for numerous publications, including The Raleigh Times, the Salisbury Post, the Durham Herald-Sun and the Greensboro News & Record, and contributed works to many national publications, such as Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, and USA Today.
Roger Winstead, a Pulizter Prize-nominated photo-journalist while working at several North Carolina newspapers, currently serves as NC State's director of photography.
NC STATE BASKETBALL is priced at $30.00. It is distributed by the University of North Carolina Press on behalf of the North Carolina State University Department of Athletics. It is widely available through booksellers, online retailers, and directly from UNC Press at www.uncpress.unc.edu.
