RALEIGH, N.C. -- The practice started just a year ago, which meant it was too soon to call it a tradition, but when NC State's baseball team takes batting practice in Halloween costumes this Sunday, the tradition will officially begin.
The Wolfpack will play the final game of its fall intrasquad world series on Sunday at 2 p.m. As it did a year ago on Halloween, the team will take pregame batting practice in Halloween costumes. Admission to all three games of the fall series is free, and the public is encouraged to attend. Game times are 6 p.m. on Friday, and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Batting practice on Sunday should begin around noon.
"We started this last year, and the players really had a great time with it," head coach Elliott Avent said. "We've wanted to plan our fall world series so that it was at about the same time every year, and it just worked out really well to do that at the end of October. The tie-in with Halloween was a natural. We want our fans to associate our fall series with this time of year, and taking batting practice in costumes is a way for the players to have some fun with it."
Sophomore righthanders Ethan Ogburn and Josh Easley will be the starting pitchers in the Friday game. Junior righthander Vance Williams and sophomore righthander Danny Healey will be the starters on Saturday. Junior righthander Cory Mazzoni and senior righty Rob Chamra will start the series finale on Sunday.
