Wrestling Dumps VMI, 28-10

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State won seven of 10 matches Saturday and cruised to a 28-10 victory over VMI in college wrestling action at Reynolds Coliseum.
The victory lifted NC State 3-5 on the season while VMI fell to 1-3. The Wolfpack got pins from sophomore 174-pounder Quinton Godley and freshman 197-pounder Andrew Tumlin. VMI got a major decision at 184 pounds from Andrew Szymborski.
Mike Moreno got the Wolfpack started in the 125-pound bout to start the match, taking a 5-0 lead over John Pope with a takedown and near fall at the end of the first period, then an escape to start the second. Pope escaped to start the third period, but was whistled for stalling, giving Moreno a 6-1 decision and NC State a 3-0 lead in the team scoring.
VMI tied the score in the score with Luke Todd’s 5-1 decision over Scott Norris at 133. Trailing 1-0 to start the third period, Todd started in the bottom position, got a reversal to take a 2-1 lead and got two points when Norris was called twice for stalling. A point for riding time completed the scoring for Todd.
NC State freshman Dale Shull opened the 141 match with a quick takedown of VMI’s David Yost, then rode him the entire first period. Yost began the second period with a takedown, but Shull escaped and quickly took Yost down for a 5-2 lead. Shull began the third period with an escape, but Yost responded with a quick takedown to cut the lead to 6-4. Yost rode Shull out to negate the riding time, but Shull’s 6-4 decision put NC State back in front 6-3.
At 149, the Wolfpack’s Bobby Ward worked over VMI’s Michael Long for a pair takedowns and a three-point near fall to take a 7-1 lead after a period. Ward started the second period down and was unable to escape. When Long opted to start the third period on top, Ward picked up a pair of points with a reversal. Long escaped to make the final 9-2. The decision pushed NC State’s team lead to six points at 9-3. Ward improved to 16-6 overall, 10-3 at 149.
Colton Palmer continued the winning streak for NC State with a 12-6 decision at 157. Palmer used a pair of takedowns and a near fall in the second period to break the match open. He scored four points with a quick flurry at the end of the period that included a takedown and a pair of back points. The decision gave NC State a 12-3 lead in the team scoring.
At 165, Bobby Ward scored four takedowns and a near fall in the first period, then held on for a 12-4 major decision over Matt Brock. That lifted the NC State lead in the team scoring to 16-3.
Godley clinched the team victory for the Wolfpack when he pinned John Dommert at 5:12 at 174 pounds. That made it 22-3 with three matches remaining.
Szymborski got VMI back on the board with a 10-2 major decision over Wolfpack freshman Cedric Moore at 184. Szymborski’s major cut NC State’s team lead to 22-7, but Tumlin made it 28-7 when he pinned Vinnie Gallo 25 seconds into the match at 197 pounds.
In the heavyweight bout, NC State’s Eloheim Palma scored an escape to start the second period, but VMI’s Josh Wine got a reversal to start the third. Palma’s escape tied the score, but Wine got a takedown inside the 40-second mark to take a 4-2 decision and remain unbeaten at 9-0.
The Wolfpack opens the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule with a dual match at Duke this evening at 6:30.
