Wrestling Splits Twin-Bill Vs. Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb

NC State won six of 10 matches Wednesday night, including the last three in a row, and defeated Gardner-Webb 22-16 in the second dual match of a doubleheader at Boiling Springs, N.C.
In the first match, Appalachian State won five of the first six bouts, four of them by major decision, to hand the Wolfpack a 22-17 defeat. The Wolfpack won three of the last four matches, but needed to score 10 points in the final two bouts in order to overcome Appalachian State’s early lead. That became a moot point when Jacob Earp handed Scott Norris a 4-2 defeat at 133 in the next-to-last match. Freshman 141-pounder Dale Shull pinned the Mountaineers’ Chris Collura in 58 seconds in the final match, but it was too little, too late.
In the nightcap vs. the Bulldogs, the Pack won three of the first four matches, then watched as Gardner-Webb won three in a row, two by major decisions, to take a 19-9 lead with three matches to go. Sophomore 125-pounder Mike Moreno pulled the Wolfpack back into the match by pinning Michael Slaughter at 5:26, and Scott Norris and Dale Shull won at 133 and 141, respectively, to close out the match. Shull won 13-0 for a major decision.
NC State will return to action Saturday with a pair of matches in the state of Maryland. The Wolfpack will take on Maryland in College Park at noon, then take on Navy at 7 p.m. in Annapolis.
