Wrestling Prepares for Wednesday Doubleheader at GWU

RALEIGH, N.C. — The NC State wrestling team will wrestle the second and third of five straight dual matches away from home when it takes on Gardner-Webb and Appalachian State on Wednesday at Buies Creek. The Wolfpack will wrestle the Bulldogs at 5 p.n., followed by the dual match vs. the Mountaineers at 7 o’clock.
NC State, 4-6 in dual matches, is coming off a disappointing 33-7 defeat at the hands of Ohio University this past Sunday at Athens, Ohio. The Wolfpack, young and banged up with injuries, dropped eight of the 10 matches to the Bobcats, but fielded a lineup of six freshmen and three sophomores, with three starters injured.
“Those are facts, but not an excuse,” Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan said. “We’ve had our chances in several of the matches we’ve lost. The injuries haven’t helped, but we have to work our way through that. Nobody’s feeling sorry for us. We still have a lot of wrestling in front of us. We have to continue to improve.”
Sophomore 149-pounder Bobby Ward leads the Wolfpack. Ward is 18-6 overall, with a 12-3 mark since dropping from 157 to 149. Ward has won five bouts in a row and 11 of his last 13. The Wolfpack also has gotten strong performances from heavyweight Eloheim Palma (16-9) and 141-pounder Dale Shull (11-9), both freshmen.
“Bobby Ward has been very consistent for us,” Jordan said. “He was good at 157, but he’s really strong at 149. Eloheim and Dale are very talented, but they’re going through the learning curve that all freshmen go through. It’s a big jump from high school to college, even for the best freshmen.”
Following the doubleheader at Buies Creek, NC State will head back out on the road this coming Saturday with a split-venue twinbill at Maryland at noon and at Navy at 7 p.m.
