GREENSBORO, N.C. - Willie Young and Jamelle Eugene were quite a hit during the round of player interviews at the ACC Football Kickoff in Greensboro on Sunday. The pair did four hours of grueling interviews, but managed to get a few laughs in every room they entered.
Young drove to the Grandover Resort from Raleigh on Sunday morning and as soon as he checked in and looked out his window at the beautiful grounds of the golf courses, he knew what he wanted to do. He headed to his car and got out his fishing poles! Of course he didn’t catch anything, but at least he didn’t get nailed on the head with a golf ball!
Eugene flew in from Atlanta where he had spent a few days and met up with his teammate and roommate for the night. The players from all 12 schools ate lunch together and the Wolfpack players sat with C.J. Spiller and Ricky Sapp from Clemson and Christian Ponder and Dekoda Watson from Florida State. The six players had a great time comparing practice schedules and Young got reminded by the Clemson players of his interception return for a touchdown a few years ago. He also shared with Spiller some of his memories of trying to catch him last season.
Following lunch, all of the players donned their jerseys and went outside for a group picture with ACC Commissioner John Swofford. Then it was inside for interviews. State’s players did two hours of electronic interviews first and posed in front of a green screen for an ACC promotional campaign.
Most of the questions centered on the Wolfpack’s improved expectations for the upcoming season. Eugene surprised one interview by saying he thought the team had enough talent to go ‘1-0.’ The interviewer was a little taken aback, before Eugene explained that he was just focused on one game at a time.
Young had a good laugh in one interview room, where 4-5 television stations were positioned. When asked about teammate Nate Irving, Young resplied, “He’s doing really well. I saw him running to catch a bus on campus the other day and he was flying.” The reporters immediately began asking follow-up questions, anticipating reporting the big news that Nate was back and already chasing buses before Young told them he was just kidding.
At 4:45, the tandem headed to the print interview area, but first stopped at “Radio Row” where they did a couple of live interviews.
After interviews, the guys took some down time with video games and a pool table in the player’s lounge.
Tonight they’ll join the other players for dinner and then will be up bright and early to play golf tomorrow.
