Riggins Has Big Week In Northwoods League

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State first baseman Harold Riggins used a big week at the plate to climb onto a few offensive leaderboards for the Madison Mallards (19-14) in the Northwoods League.
Riggins has hit safely in his last five games, going a combined 9-for-23 with six doubles, a home run, 10 RBIs, and four runs scored.
Riggins collected two hits, including a double, in a 3-2 victory in 12 innings over Eau Claire on June 26. The very next night, he doubled and hit his fifth home run of the season en route to a five-RBI night in a lopsided 19-8 win against Brainerd Lakes. In a 9-6 loss against Wisconsin on June 30, Riggins managed to continue his extra-base hit parade by going 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs.
On the season, Riggins is hitting .306 (30-for-98) with nine doubles, a triple, and five home runs. He’s driven in 28 runs and scored another 16. Riggins’s .306 average is 11th overall in the Northwoods League and his 28 RBIs are second in the league.
Pratt Maynard and Andrew Ciencin - Forest City Owls (Coastal Plain League)
Maynard’s bat has quieted down as of late, but his Forest City Owls have continued making noise as one of the top teams in the country in collegiate summer baseball.
In a rain-shortened six innings on June 26, Maynard homered in two at-bats, driving in two runs in an 8-3 win at Asheboro. Two nights later, Maynard collected an RBI-double and scored twice to help the Owls to a 5-3 victory against Martinsville.
On the summer, Maynard is hitting .344 (33-for-96) with 11 doubles, three homers, and 25 RBIs and sits near the top of the leaderboard in several offensive categories for the Coastal Plain League. Maynard is currently seventh in batting average, leads in runs scored (26) and RBIs, and is second in doubles.
Wolfpack freshman Andrew Ciencin joined Forest City midway through their season, debuting for the Owls on June 30 at Martinsville. Ciencin collected one hit in four at-bats in a 4-3 Forest City victory.
The Owls (24-4) finished another successful week with a No. 1 overall ranking in the Perfect Game Crosschecker Poll of summer league teams on Wednesday. They leapfrogged the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod League and have won three of their last four games.
Vance Williams - Outer Banks Daredevils (Coastal Plain League)
Williams had another solid week out of the bullpen for the Daredevils, appearing in two games, throwing four innings without allowing a hit, and striking out four. Both outings resulted in wins for Outer Banks.
On the season, Williams is 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA in 14 innings. He has struck out 21 and walked seven. Opposing hitters are hitting just .068 against the Wolfpack righthander.
Cory Mazzoni - Slippery Rock Sliders (Prospect League)
Mazzoni picked up a win on June 29 at Chillicothe, going 7 2/3 innings, allowing just one run while striking out nine to improve his season record to 2-2.
In 29 2/3 innings, Mazzoni has posted a 3.34 ERA, striking out 32 and walking eight. Mazzoni is tied for the team lead in strikeouts and is second in innings pitched and victories.
Chris Schaeffer - Green Bay Bullfrogs (Northwoods League)
Schaeffer figured in on a victory against Brainerd Lakes, getting an RBI-single in a 2-1 win on June 26.
In 31 games, Schaeffer has hit .144 with two doubles and 10 RBIs.
Jake Buchanan - Cotuit Kettlers (Cape Cod League)
Rain has played havoc with the Cape League schedule, but Buchanan finally made his second start of the season on June 29 against Bourne, scattering six hits in six shutout innings. He struck out five and walked one in the no-decision.
Through two starts, Buchanan has yet to allow an earned run in 12 innings, and has struck out nine while walking one.
Grant Sasser - Haymarket Senators (Valley Baseball League)
Sasser had a busy week for the Senators, making two starts in a pair of Haymarket victories this past week. Sasser went 7 2/3 innings in a June 25 start against Covington, allowing just one run, none earned, on two hits. He struck out six and walked one while picking up his second victory of the season. On June 30 against Fauquier, Sasser went seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits in a no-decision. He struck out six and walked one.
Overall, Sasser is 2-0 in five appearances, four starts, notching a 2.33 ERA in 27 innings. He has struck out 21 and walked eight, with opposing batters hitting just .211 off the Wolfpack southpaw.
Russell Wilson - Gastonia Grizzlies (Coastal Plain League)
Wilson recently completed his season with the Grizzlies and has reported back to NC State for the second session of summer school and pre-camp preparation for the 2009 football season.
Overall, Wilson hit .205 (17-for-83) for the Grizzlies in 25 games with three doubles and three RBIs. He was 12-for-16 in stolen bases.
Jon Still - Portland Sea Dogs (Eastern League (AA) - Boston Red Sox)
On June 28 against New Hampshire, Still homered and drove in three runs in five at-bats in an 8-5 win. He followed that performance up with another home run and three RBIs in a 9-5 loss at New Britain on June 30. In a doubleheader in New Britain on July 1, Still went 3-for-6 overall with a double, an RBI, and a run scored in a pair of Sea Dog losses.
On the year, Still is hitting .230 in 71 games with 18 doubles, a triple, 10 home runs, and 43 RBIs.
Eric Surkamp - Augusta GreenJackets (South Atlantic League (A) - San Francisco Giants)
Surkamp (5-2) picked up the victory in a June 26 game against the Rome Braves. He went seven innings and allowed just five hits and one run while striking out seven.
Through 12 starts, Surkamp has posted a 3.59 ERA in 67 2/3 innings. He has struck out 82 and walked just 15, with opponents hitting just .265 against the former Wolfpack lefty.
Andrew Taylor - Cedar Rapids Kernels (Midwest League (A) - Angels)
Taylor has been on a bit of a roll of late for the Kernels. Taylor (2-0) picked up a win in relief on June 30, allowing just one hit while striking out three in two scoreless innings.
In his last 14 innings stretching over 10 games, Taylor is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA. He has struck out 19 and walked seven.
