RALEIGH, N.C. - Former NC State first baseman Aaron Bates, recently named the Eastern League Player of the Month while with the Portland Sea Dogs, was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket by the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.
Bates was a major portion of the Portland offense during May, batting .370 (40-for-108) with seven doubles, six homers, and 28 RBIs. He carried a .456 on-base percentage and .602 slugging percentage (1.058 OPS), reaching base safely in all but two of his 28 games in May. Bates was named the Eastern League Player of the Week twice during the month, for the weeks of May 4 and May 25.
The 6-4, 232-pound slugging first baseman is hitting .333 (70-for-210) with 13 doubles, seven homers, 39 RBIs and 40 runs scored in 53 games this season through Monday’s game with Pawtucket. Bates leads Red Sox minor leaguers in batting average and RBIs.
Bates hit .425 (91-for-214) with 16 doubles, 12 home runs, and 64 RBIs as a draft-eligible sophomore with the Wolfpack in 2005, and was selected in the eighth round of the June MLB draft by the Florida Marlins, but decided to come back to school for his junior season. In 63 games as a junior in 2006, Bates hit .354 (86-for-243) with 20 doubles, 10 home runs, and 54 RBIs. Following the 06 season, he again was drafted, this time in the third round (83rd pick overall) by the Boston Red Sox.
In two years with NC State, Bates compiled a .387 batting average with 22 home runs and 118 RBIs in 121 games. He is NC State’s career leader in batting average (minimum 150 career at-bats).
NC State fans in the Triangle area will have the opportunity to watch Bates with his new club when Pawtucket plays the Durham Bulls on June 19-21 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
