NC State’s Darrion Caldwell earned a spot on the USA National team last month at the U.S. World Team Trials, held in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
In earning a third-place finish at the Trials, Caldwell faced a quartet of very accomplished wrestlers who combined earned All-America 10 times in college. Two just finished their collegiate careers in the last two years and are in the first stages of what should be very promising careers on the international stage. The other two are successful veterans, with more than 15 years of international experience between them:
Doug Schwab, a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team and a former three-time All-American at Iowa, and a current assistant coach for the Hawkeyes. In 2007 he won the U.S. Senior Freestyle title, earned a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and placed fifth at the 2007 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Caldwell defeated Schwab in the quarterfinals of the 66 kg challenge tournament.
Josh Churella, a three-time All-American at Michigan who concluded his collegiate career in 2009. Caldwell defeated Churella in the match for third place.
Brian Stith, a two-time All-American at Arizona State and a current assistant coach on the Sun Devils’ staff. Caldwell defeated Stith in the semifinals of the 66 kg challenge tournament.
Jared Frayer, a two-time All-American at Oklahoma and the strength and conditioning coach at Iowa for several years, was named an assistant coach at Wisconsin on June 17. Frayer placed second at the U.S. World Team Trials in 2006, third in 2005 and fourth in 2007. He was the 2007 U.S. national freestyle runner-up, placing third in 2004 and 2005, fourth in 2006 and fifth in 2009. In 2008, Frayer placed third at the U.S. Open and fourth at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Frayer defeated Caldwell in a close match in the finals of the 66 kg challenge tournament.
