CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia used a balanced attack and stole five bases, and three Cavaliers pitchers combined on a six-hitter Saturday as UVa took a 6-3 victory over NC State at Davenport Field.
Virginia, ranked No. 11 nationally, has won the first two games of the series and improves to 34-8-1 overall and 13-7-1 in the ACC. NC State falls to 19-24 and 7-16.
The story of the game was Virginia’s pitching. Starter Andrew Carraway (5-0) worked the first 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked three and struck out two. Relievers Neal Davis and Kevin Arico pitched the final 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit. Arico recorded the last four outs to notch his fifth save of the season.
For the first time in his five starts, Wolfpack lefthander John Lambert (1-2) struggled with his curveball and allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The starters traded scoreless innings until the top of the third. Drew Martin led off for the Wolfpack and was hit by a pitch. With one away, Devon Cartwright hit an opposite-field single to right-center, moving Martin to third. Pat Ferguson’s two-out opposite-field single to left scored Martin and gave NC State its first lead of the series at 1-0.
The lead did not last long. Jarrett Parker and Tyler Cannon led off the bottom of the third with singles through the left side of the infield, then pulled a double steal. Pratt Maynard’s throw to second was wide and sailed into center field for an error. Parker scored on the error and Cannon went to third. Phil Gosselin singled up the middle to make it 2-1.
Danny Hultzen led off the bottom of the fourth for the Cavaliers and hit a slow roller up the first-base line. Ferguson fielded the ball, but Lambert was slow covering first base abd Hultzen beat it out for an infield single. With one down, Lambert hit John Barr with a pitch to put runners on first and second. Parker singled off the glove of a sliding Ciencin at second base and into center field. Hultzen scored on the play, and Barr came around to score when Kyle Wilson’s throw from center field was wild for an error.
The Wolfpack got back into the game in the top of the seventh. Drew Martin rolled a single down the left-field line and came all the way around to score on Kyle Wilson’s double off the wall in left-center. Cartwright hit a grounder to shortstop and Cannon’s throw to first pulled Hultzen off the bag for an error, leaving runners on first and third with one out. Cartwright allowed himself to get picked off first base, and in the rundown between first and second, Cannon dropped the ball for an error, allowing Cartwright to reach second and Wilson to score, cutting the lead to 4-3.
After scoring twice to trim the lead to one, the Wolfpack was unable to hold the Cavaliers in the bottom of the inning. Cannon got things started by drawing a leadoff walk from reliever Vance Williams. Alex Sogard came in and Goselin sacrifice the runner to second base. Dan Grovatt singled to right to drive in Cannon and push the lead back to a pair at 5-3.
Virginia scored its final run in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out infield single by Parker and a triple into the right-field corner by Cannon.
