RALEIGH, N.C. - With a week left before final exams, NC State will head to Greensboro to take on UNCG on Tuesday before a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Virginia over the weekend.
The Wolfpack, 19-21 after dropping all three games of a conference series to 15th-ranked Florida State this past weekend, will look to bounce back from a difficult week also saw the Wolfpack fall at East Carolina.
NC State defeated UNCG 4-3 back on March 24, and holds a 21-5 advantage in the overall series with the Spartans. The Wolfpack has won 14 of the last 16 meetings between the two teams. In the March 24 game at Doak Field at Dail Park, freshman DH John Gianis went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and junior outfielder Wade Moore went 2-for-3 with a two-run double. Junior lefthander Alex Sogard got the win with three scoreless innings of relief, and Kyle Rutter pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first save.
UNCG is 14-19 overall after taking two of three from The Citadel over the weekend. Ed Jayjack leads UNCG in batting at .343 and home runs with four. He has 21 RBIs. Pedro Leon is hitting .333 with nine doubles, two home runs and a team-high 27 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. UNCG is batting .275 as a team and is scoring 6.03 runs per game. The Spartans have a 6.88 staff ERA.
Although the Wolfpack had a rough weekend offensively vs. Florida State, senior outfielder Devon Cartwright went 3-for-10 with a double, and freshman infielder Andrew Ciencin went 3-for-11 with a home run. Sophomore catcher Chris Schaeffer went 2-for-7 with a double.
Gianis leads the Wolfpack with a .317 average. Cartwright is hitting .295 with nine doubles, two triples, four home runs and 25 RBIs. Freshman utilityman Pratt Maynard is hitting .271, is tied for the team lead with five home runs, and has a team-best 31 RBIs. Junior outfielder Drew Poulk is hitting .266, is tied with Maynard for the team home run lead with five, and has driven in 28 runs.
WKNC-FM (88.1) will broadcast the game live. The broadcast can be heard on-line at gopack.com through the Pack Pass package.
