Seminoles Win 13-2, Sweep Baseball Series

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Mike McGee had a 3-for-6 day at the plate and turned in six strong innings on the mound Sunday to lead Florida State to a 13-2 victory over NC State, completing a three-game sweep of the Wolfpack at Doak Field at Dail Park.
With the victory, the Seminoles improved to 25-12 overall and 12-7 in the ACC with the win. The Wolfpack fell to 19-21 overall and 7-14 in ACC play.
McGee (3-2) started and allowed two runs on three hits in six innings of work. He struck out five and walked four to earn his third victory of the season. Cory Mazzoni (1-5) took the loss for the Wolfpack. He allowed six runs, five earned, on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. Mazzoni struck out one and walked three.
Florida State landed on the scoreboard in the opening inning. Tyler Holt hit a shot into the gap in left-center for a double. Following a strikeout by Stephen Cardullo, McGee helped himself out by lining a single to left to bring in Holt for a 1-0 Seminole lead.
NC State grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first. Devon Cartwright struck out swinging with one out, but reached first when the ball got by Florida State catcher Parker Brunelle on a wild pitch. Pratt Maynard brought Cartwright around to score with a double into left-center field to knot the score at one apiece. Maynard advanced to third on McGee’s second wild pitch of the inning and came in to score when Drew Poulk lofted a sacrifice fly to right to give the Wolfpack a 2-1 advantage.
The Seminoles sent 11 hitters to the plate to retake the lead in the third inning. Holt led off with a walk. McGee rolled a single through the left side to put two on for Florida State with one out. Holt and McGee advanced on a double steal. Jason Stidham brought in Holt on a sacrifice fly to tie the score at two. Mazzoni issued a two-out walk to Stuart Tapley to keep the inning alive. Jack Posey gave the Seminoles the lead with a single to left, scoring McGee to make it 3-2. Ohmed Danesh extended the Florida State lead with a single through the right side of the infield to bring in Tapley. Bases-loaded walks to Brunelle and Holt capped the inning for the Seminoles.
Florida State used a two-out rally in the fourth to add another run. Tapley and Posey both reached after being hit by a pitch. Facing Wolfpack reliever Grant Sasser, Danesh poked a double down the right-field line to put the Seminoles up, 7-2. Sasser ended the inning by stiking out James Ramsey.
The Seminoles tacked on two more runs an inning later. Holt was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After a one-out walk to McGee, Stidham brought Holt in with a single through the right side to give the Seminoles a six-run lead. Tapley reached on an error, allowing McGee to score all the way from first to spot Florida State a 9-2 lead.
The Noles added to their lead in the top of the seventh off Wolfpack reliever Zak Sinclair. McGee reached on a single up the middle with one down in the inning. Stidham followed with a walk. Tapley lined a single to left to load the bases for the Seminoles. Posey drove in McGee with a single to right to make it 10-2. Ramsey delivered the big blow of the inning, a two-run single to center to score Stidham and Tapley and give the Seminoles a 10-run lead, 12-2.
The Seminoles added more insurance in the ninth. Leadoff hitter D’Vontrey Richardson led off and became the fourth batter hit by a pitch on the afternoon. Reliever Jason Zinser got two quick outs, but pinch-hitter Sean Gilmartin walked to put two runners on. Cardullo drove Richardson home on a double to right-center field, giving the Seminoles a 13-2 lead.
NC State will return to action Tuesday at UNC Greensboro. Game time is 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1) and on-line at gopack.com through the Pack Pass package.
