Seminoles Defeat Wolfpack in Weekend Opener, 9-3

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Tyler Holt went 4-for-5 and scored three runs and Stuart Tapley added a solo home run to lead Florida State to a 9-3 victory over NC State to open a three-game ACC series on Friday at Doak Field at Dail Park. Florida State improves to 23-12 overall and 10-7 in the ACC. The Wolfpack falls to 19-19 and 7-12 in ACC play.
Jimmy Gillheeney (5-2) started and took the loss for the Wolfpack. He allowed four runs on six hits in seven innings. Gillheeney struck out five and walked four. Sean Gilmartin grabbed the victory for the Seminoles. He went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked four. Gilmartin improves to 7-1 on the year.
The Seminoles landed on the scoreboard quickly in the top of the first inning off Gillheeney. Holt, Florida State’s leading hitter, lined a leadoff triple into the left-field corner to set up the early scoring opportunity. Two hitters later, Mike McGee hit a one-out shot down the left-field line to bring Holt in and send the Seminoles to an early 1-0 lead.
NC State tied the game up in the home half of the first. Devon Cartwright lofted a double into the left-center-field gap to lead the rally for the Pack. Back-to-back walks to Drew Poulk and Pratt Maynard loaded the bases for Russell Wilson with just one out. Cartwright came in to score when Wilson grounded out to shortstop, tying the game at one apiece. Gilmartin prevented further damage by getting Chris Schaeffer to ground out to third.
The Wolfpack grabbed the lead in the second inning with one swing of Andrew Ciencin’s bat. Ciencin hit a 2-1 Gilmartin offering over the left-field fence to put NC State up 2-1.
Florida State grabbed the lead back with a pair of runs in the third. Holt lined a single to left to lead things off, and Stephen Cardullo walked to put two on with nobody out. Holt stole third and later scored on a Mike McGee sacrifice fly to knot the game at 2-2. Florida State got took the lead when Jason Stidham lofted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Cardullo.
NC State tied the game at three in the bottom of the third. Schaeffer hit a two-out double down the left-field line, then came in to score when Pat Ferguson doubled to left to tie the game up, 3-3.
The Seminoles grabbed the lead again in the top of the seventh. Ohmed Danesh reached on a leadoff walk. Holt lined a single to left, his third hit of the game, to put two on with one out. After Gillheeney struck out Cardullo, McGee brought Danesh home when he lined a ball off of Gillheeney’s ribcage to give Florida State a 4-3 lead.
Florida State added four runs in the eighth to blow the game open. Stuart Tapley led the inning off with a double to left off reliever Sam Brown. After advancing to third on a Jack Posey sacrifice, Tapley scored when Tommy Oravetz singled down the right-field line to put the Seminoles up by two. Rafael Lopez continued the rally with a two-out walk. One hitter later, Holt drove in pinch runner D’Vontrey Richardson on a double down the right field line, his fourth hit of the night to go up 6-3. Florida State made it 8-3 when Cardullo reached on an error, with Lopez and Holt scoring on the play.
Florida State put one more on the board in the ninth when Stuart Tapley launched a two-out solo home run to left to give the Seminoles a 9-3 lead.
NC State and Florida State will play the second game of this weekend’s three-game ACC series Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1) and on-line at gopack.com through the Pack Pass package.
