RALEIGH, N.C. - Baseball takes break from Atlantic Coast Conference competition Tuesday and Wednesday, hostin Wofford on Tuesday and traveling to East Carolina on Wednesday. This will be NC State’s last five-game week until mid-May.
Wofford (14-15) comes to Doak Field at Dail Park for a 6:30 p.m. start Tuesday. The Terriers, who have dropped four of their last six games, will start senior righthander Scott Summers (3-3, 7.47). NC State’s pitching plans are TBD.
Freshman outfielder Konstantine Diamaduros leads Wofford offensively. He comes into play this week batting .356 and leads the Terriers with six home runs and 40 RBIs. Junior outfielder Kyle Behrendt leads the team in batting at .393 and doubles with 13. He has hit two home runs and driven in 27. Junior shortstop Michael Gilmartin checks in at .331 with five doubles, five homers and 27 RBIs. Freshman outfielder James Foster leads the team with 12 steals in 13 attempts and is batting .315. Wofford is hitting .305 as a team and is scoring 7.8 runs per game.
East Carolina (26-9) has cooled a little since its 14-4 victory over the Wolfpack on April 1 at the Doak. The Pirates fell to non-conference opponents North Carolina and UNC-Wilmington last week and then dropped two of three to second-ranked Rice in Greenville over the weekend.
Despite dropping four of five last week, ECU still comes into play this week hitting .353 as a team and scoring 9.7 runs per game. Junior first baseman Kyle Roller is still the Pirates’ offensive leader, hitting .354 with seven doubles, eight home runs and a team-high 42 RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Devin Harris is hitting .372 with five doubles, nine home runs and 30 RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Trent Whitehead is hitting .412 with 13 doubles, two home runs and 25 RBIs. Senior first baseman Brandon Hendersonis hitting .419 with eight doubles, five home runs and 30 RBIs. Six ECU regulars are hitting .350 or better.
NC State (18-17) is coming off a disappointing weekend at Duke. The Wolfpack dropped two of three games to the Blue Devils in a crucial ACC series, falling to 7-11 in the conference and in 10th place in the overall league standings. Junior lefty Jimmy Gillheeney scattered six hits over eight innings in the opener and helped the Pack get the series off to a fast start with a 3-1 victory. Duke came back to take the second game of the series 11-2 behind Christopher Manno and Dennis O’Grady, who combined on a one-hitter through eight innings. NC State appeared poised to take the series by jumping to a 5-0 lead int the finale, but Duke kept chipping away and won 8-7 in extra innings. Junior outfielder Drew Poulk, junior shortstop Dallas Poulk and freshmen John Gianis and Andrew Ciencin had four hits apiece in the series.
Gianis leads the Wolfpack in hitting at .338, and junior outfielder Devon Cartwright and freshman utilityman Pratt Maynard are the to run-producers. Cartwright is batting .305 with four home runs and 23 RBIs. Maynard is at .264 with team-leading totals of five home runs and 29 RBIs. Ciencin is hitting .304 with eight doubles, a home run and 14 RBIs, most of that coming since he broke into the lineup to stay two weeks ago during the Virginia Tech series.
WKNC-FM (88.1) will broadcast both games, and both broadcasts will be available on-line on gopack.com through the Pack Pass package.
