Buchanan was backed by plenty of offense, including home runs by Dusty Quattlebaum and Wade Moore. NC State improves to 11-10 overall and 2-6 in the ACC. Wake Forest drops to 10-9 and 1-7 in ACC play.
Buchanan (2-2) gave up three hits and three runs in his second complete game of the season. He walked three and struck out eight. The three runs allowed all came in the first inning, after which Buchanan went into cruise control. Wake Forest reliever Alex Wiesner (0-1) took the loss for Demon Deacons. Starter Brad Kledzik gave up eight hits and three runs over 6 2/3 innings.
Micah Jarrett led off the bottom of the first and was hit by a Buchanan pitch to start things for the Demon Decons. Jarrett later came around to score when Dustin Hood lined a double down the left-field line to take a 1-0 lead. Mike Murray followed with a walk. Two hitters later, Weldon Woodall drove Murray in with a single up the middle to go up 2-0. Evan Ocheltree continued the rally with Buchanan’s second walk of the inning. The score was extended to 3-0 when Shane Kroker singled to center bringing in Ocheltree.
The Wolfpack quickly chipped away at the lead in the top of the second. Dusty Quattlebaum led off with his first home run of the season, a towering shot down the right-field line to cut the Wake Forest lead to 3-1. After back-to-back singles, Andrew Ciencin brought the Pack a run closer, bringing home Dallas Poulk on a sacrifice fly to close the lead to 3-2.
The Wolfpack grabbed its first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the seventh. Andrew Ciencin led off the rally with a line-drive single to left. Ciencin moved around to third on a wild pitch and stolen base, chasing Kledzik from the game. Wiesner walked Kyle Wilson and Maynard to load the bases with two outs for pinch hitter Drew Poulk., who lined a single up the middle, scoring Ciencin and Wilson for a 4-3 score.
The Pack extended the lead in the eighth inning. Dallas Poulk singled to left. After Pat Ferguson sacrificed Poulk to second and Ciencin grounded out, Wade Moore hit a two-run home run to right off of Bouton to stretch NC State’s lead to 6-3.
NC State put the game away in the ninth with four runs on just one hit. Wake Forest reliever Gabe Feldman surrendered three straight walks to load the bases with nobody out. After Feldman’s exit, Brandon Johnson came on in relief for the Demon Deacons and Dallas Poulk gave the Pack its first run of the ninth with a single to left to go up 7-3. Ferguson followed by grounding into a force play, scoring Drew Poulk from third to extend the lead 8-3. The final two Wolfpack runs on the night for the came when Wade Moore hit a bouncer to third that was mishandled for an error. Domonique Rodgers and Pat Ferguson scored on the play for a 10-3 score.
