RALEIGH, N.C. Jimmy Gillheeney scattered seven hits over 8 1/3 innings Saturday and Devon Cartwright continued his hot hitting with two hits and two RBIs as NC State defeated Maryland 8-3 in the first game of an Atlantic Coast Conference baseball series at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Gillheeney, who improved to 3-0 with the win, surrendered a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the first inning, then settled down and dominated the Terrapins, setting down 11 in a row at one point, 14 of 15, and 25 of 28 before back-to-back singles in the ninth inning drove him from the game. Gillheeney walked one and struck out six. Joey Cutler retired the only two men he faced to close out the game.
Maryland starter Scott Swinson (0-3) took the loss but kept Maryland within striking distance throughout his 6 2/3 innings of work. He allowed five runs, four of them in the third inning, walked five and struck out a career-high five.
Gillheeney ran into trouble right from the get-go in the top of the first inning. David Poutier reached on a once-ouyt infield single, took second on a balk and scored on Will Greenberg’s double into the right-field corner. Mike Murphy grounded out to move Greenberg to third, and Jensen Pupa’s grounder through the right side of the inning got the run home to make it 2-0.
Cartwright got NC State started in the bottom of the first with a double down the left-field line. Pratt Maynard walked, and Kyle Wilson singled to center to drive in Cartwright and slice the Maryland lead to 2-1.
Drew Martin walked to lead off the bottom of the third and Dallas Poulk singled up the middle to put runners on the corners with none out. Cartwright hit a rope to right-center that skipped between the center and right fielders on the rain-slickened grass and rolled all the way to the wall for a two-run triple. Maynard followed with a two-run homer to right, his fourth of the season to give Gillheeney a 5-2 lead. Swinson settled down after that, retiring 13 of the next 18 men he faced to carry the Terps into the seventh inning down 5-3 thanks to a Greenberg triple in the sixth followed by a Murphy sacrifice fly.
NC State blew the game open in the bottom of the eighth against the Maryland bullpen. John Gianis led off and singled to right. Chris Schaeffer bunted Gianis to second and Martin walked to put runners on first and second. Adam Kolarek came into the game, replacing Brent Jones, and walked Dallas Poulk to load the bases with one out. The Wolfpack scored runs on a wild pitch and a passed ball to make it 7-3, then closed out the scoring on Maynard’s RBI double to the wall in dead center field.
Weather permitting. NC State and Maryland will play the remaining two games of this series on Sunday. The first game will begin at 1:30. The ACC office has waived the rule prohibiting conference games from starting after 6 p.m. on Sunday. If necessary, the two teams will play a night game to conclude the series. Again, weather permitting. Please check gopack.com for updates.
