RALEIGH, N.C. NC State had several hard-fought rounds in Sunday’s match with Ohio University, but starting and ending the day with forfeits put the Wolfpack at a severe disadvantage, ultimately leading to a 30-12 Ohio victory at Reynolds Coliseum.
In the first scheduled match, NC State forfeited the 125-pound class to pit Ohio University to an early 6-0 lead.
After a scoreless first period in the afternoon’s opening 133-pound match, Ohio University’s Quinton Keyes got on the scoreboard in the second period with an escape and a near fall to take a 3-0 lead over Darrius Little. The scoring opened up in the final period with an early Keyes reversal, only to see Little stage a comeback with a pair of takedowns and an escape. Keyes managed to finish off the matchup with two late escapes to win 8-5.
In the 141-pound match, Germane Lindsey added to Ohio’s scoring with an 11-5 decision over Ryan Tice. The opening period saw plenty of scoring between the two. Lindsey took an early 4-2 lead on a pair of takedowns. In the second, Lindsey scored a reversal and a takedown to add to his lead. A pair of Tice escapes were not enough as Lindsey rode to an 11-5 victory.
Ohio kept NC State scoreless after Seth Morton earned an 8-0 major decision over Sean Smith at 149-pounds. Morton never let up throughout the match, dropping three separate takedowns and an escape to close Smith out and extend Ohio’s team lead to 15-0.
Kody Hamrah got NC State on the scoreboard with a pin of Clay Tucker at the 4:16 mark at 157 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Hamrah got things started with an early escape and added a takedown to go up 3-0. Moments later, Hamrah ended the match with a pin to win to push his season record to 26-7 and close Ohio’s team lead to 15-6.
NC State’s Quinton Godley continued to close the scoring gap with a 3-2 victory over Tommy Weinkam to pull NC State to within six points at 15-9. After two scoreless periods, Weinkam got on the scoreboard first when he was awarded a penalty point when Godley ran him off the mat while Weinkam was trying to escape. Weinkam went up 2-0 when he finally earned the escape, but that was all the points he saw. Godley was awarded a penalty point for a stalling. That closed the gap to 3-2, and with 10 seconds left in the match, Godley scored a takedown to take a 3-2 decision.
In another exciting match, NC State’s Jake Burge continued the Wolfpack comeback with a 3-2 victory over Jacob Ison to shrink Ohio’s team lead to 15-12. Scoring opened up in the second period when Ison scored two escapes, but Burge remained in the hunt with a takedown to knot the score at two heading to the third period. A late escape by Burge broke the 2-2 tie and gave Burge the decision. Burge advances to 17-7 on the year.
After seeing its lead shortened to just three points, Ohio put the clamps down in the last two matchups. At 184 pounds, Ohio’s Nick Purdue defeated Mark Jahad, 3-1. Purdue, who moved up from 174, was the lone scorer in the second period with an escape to take a 1-0 lead. After a third-period escape by Jahad, Purdue put away the match with a takedown in the final 10 seconds to win 3-1 and extended Ohio’s team lead to 18-12.
Ohio’s Erik Schuth proved to be tough in the final matchup of the day in the 197-pound round by pinning NC State’s Joe Trotto at the 4:40 mark. Before the pin, Schuth scored on three takedowns and an escape, spotting Trotto just one escape in the match. Schuth ended the round with a pin to push Ohio up 24-12.
