Old Dominion Pins NC State Wrestling, 30-9

RALEIGH, N.C. Old Dominion won seven matches, three of them by fall, and defeated NC State 30-9 in a dual match Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum. The win lifted the 20th-ranked Monarchs to 17-6 in dual matches this season. The Wolfpack fell to 4-15-1.
Old Dominion got the match started with sixth-ranked 125-pounder James Nicholson pinning NC State’s Mike Moreno at 4:28. The Wolfpack cut the lead to 6-3 when 133-pounder Darrius Little used a first-period takedown and a third-period escape to defeat Kyle Hutter 3-2., but sixth-ranked Ryan Williams took a 9-6 decision over Joe Caramanica at 141 to give the Monarchs a 9-3 lead.
The Wolfpack’s Darrion Caldwell, ranked third nationally at 149, picked up a deceptively easy 8-3 decision over Joley Metzler to cut the ODU team lead to 9-6. Caldwell improved to 30-1 with the victory, making him just the second wrestler in NC State history to win 30 or more matches in a season more than once. Heavyweight Sylvester Terkay won 30 or more in 1991, 1992 and 1993.
The Wolfpack evened the team score at 9-9 with Kody Hamrah’s 8-7 decision over Kaylen Baxter at 157. Hamrah overcame a two-point deficit in the third period with a takedown in the final minute, and won with a point for riding time. The Monarchs broke the tie with Chris Brown’s 3-0 decision over the Pack’s Quinton Godley at 165, and took a six-point lead at 15-9 with Eric Decker’s 3-1 decision over Jake Burge in sudden victory.
The Monarchs went on to take the final three bouts for the final margin of victory. Joe Budi overcame an early 4-2 deficit to defeat Mark Jahad 6-4, and 16 th-ranked Jesse Strawn pinned Joe Trotto at 4:34. In the finale, Roy Dragon pinned Austin Haigler at 1:50.
NC State will take the next two weeks off in preparation for the ACC Championships, which will be held March 7 in Blacksburg, Va.
