RALEIGH, N.C. Dallas Poulk became NC State’s second preseason All-American for the 2009 season Monday when Baseball America named Poulk to its third-team All-America unit.
Earlier, the National College Baseball Writers Association named lefthander Jimmy Gillheeney a second-team preseason All-American.
Poulk, a junior second baseman from Fayetteville, N.C., was named a third-team All-American by BA in its annual preseason poll of major league scouting directors. The scouting directors are asked to make their selections based on performance, talent and professional potential. In the past, the preseason All-America team has been a predictor both of the first round of the draft and of team success. For example, members of the 2008 first team made up eight of the first 12 picks in the draft last June. In all, 15 of last year’s preseason All-Americans were drafted in the first round, and 11 of them played for teams that reached the College World Series.
Poulk, a 2007 Freshman All-American by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, batted .286 as a sophomore in 2008. He hit 11 doubles and eight home runs, drove in 33 runs and scored 37. He stole six bases.
