Wrestling Takes It On The Chin At VPI, 50-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. Virginia Tech won four matches by fall, one by technical fall and two by forfeit Sunday, and won all 10 bouts enroute to aq 50-0 whitewashing of NC State in Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling action.
The 14th-ranked Hokies improved to 19-1 overall and 4-0 in the ACC. The Wolfpack dropped to 4-14-1 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
NC State was without All-America 149-pounder Darrion Caldwell, who missed the afternoon with a recurrence of back spasms. Caldwell wrestled Saturday at Virginia and won a major decision, but was noticeably struggling with his back in the closing moments of his bout. The Pack also forfeited at 133. Virginia Tech got pins at 125, 165, 184 and 197, and scored a technical fall at heavyweight.
The Wolfpack dropped decisions at 141, 157 and 174. Joe Caramanica lost for the fourth time in a row and the sixth time in his last seven matches in dropping an 11-8 decision to 19th-ranked Chris Diaz. Caramanica fell to 11-6 with the loss. At 157, Kody Hamrah fell to 27-8 with a 5-1 loss to Jesse Dong, and freshman 174-pounder Jake Burge dropped to 18-9 after losing a 4-2 decision to Anthony Trongone on a late takedown.
NC State will finish the regular season on Saturday, February 21 vs. Old Dominion at Reynolds Coliseum. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m.
