CHARLOTTESVILLE Va. Virginia won six of 10 matches, including three of the first four, in handing NC State a 23-13 defeat Saturday night at Memorial Gymnasium. UVa won six of the 10 weight classes to earn the team victory.
Virginia (10-10, 1-2 ACC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a major decision by Calvin Cardillo at heavyweight and never trailed, although the Wolfpack (4-13-1, 0-4) climbed to within one point twice after the 125 and 157 bouts. UVa then won three of the final four matches to clinch the 23-13 triumph.
UVa held an early 11-3 lead after four weight classes before the Wolfpack battled back with back-to-back wins to cut the lead to one. Third-ranked Darrion Caldwell improved to 29-1 with a 13-3 major decision over Virginia’s Peter Ferrara at 149 pounds. The victory was the 85th of Caldwell’s career, moving him into sole possession of 10th place in NC State history. He also needs just one more win this season to become just the second NC State wrestler ever to win 30 matches in a season twice. Caldwell went 36-5 a year ago. Sylvester Terkay won 30 or more matches in 1991, 1992 and 1993.
Caldwell’s victory cut the UVa lead to 11-7, and No. 19 Kody Hamrah followed with a 5-0 decision over Virginia’s Jedd Moore to trim the lead to a single point at 11-10, but the Cavaliers won three of the last four bouts to put the match away.
NC State also got a 14-0 decision from Mike Moreno over Wyatt Anderson at 125 pounds and a 6-1 decision by Mark Jahad over Joe DeGaravilla at 184.
The featured match of the night, the battle at 141 pounds between No. 18 Nick Nelson of Virginia and No. 19 Joe Caramanica of NC State went to Nelson in a 3-2 thriller. After battling to a 1-1 tie through three periods and overtime, Caramanica held the advantage for all 30 seconds of the first tiebreaker. In the second tiebreaker, Caramanica earned a point on an escape to take the 2-1 lead, but Nelson responded with a late takedown to bring the crowd to its feet and earn a 3-2 decision.
At 174 pounds, ninth-ranked Chris Henrich posted a 4-3 win over the Wolfpack’s Jake Burge. Henrich improved to 32-1 on the season, while Burge fell to 18-8 and had his seven-match winning streak snapped.
The Wolfpack will stay in southwest Virginia for a 5 p.m. match Sunday at Virginia Tech.
