Wrestling Splits On Oklahoma Trip

Eleventh-ranked Oklahoma got two pins and two major decisions Saturday afternoon to overcome a fast start by NC State and defeat the Wolfpack 26-15 in a dual match in Norman, Okla.
The dual with the Sooners was the final match of a tri-meet between NC State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma City. Eearlier in the afternoon, four NC State freshmen recorded victories and the Wolfpack won eight of 10 bouts to defeat the Stars 36-8.
The dual split leaves NC State at 2-2 for the season. Oklahoma, which defeated Oklahoma City 30-16 in the morning, improved to 4-0 with the sweep. Oklahoma fell to 2-3.
“We wrestled really well,” Wolfpack coach Carter Jordan said. “We had six freshmen in the lineup, two of them backups, and we really should have won six matches from Oklahoma. They’re a really good team, and our kids went down fighting in every bout. We have a lot of work to do, but this team really battles you for every point.”
NC State got two victories each from senior 125-pounder Taylor Cummings (4-3), junior 133-pounder Darrius Little (7-1), and freshman 141-pounder Dale Shull (6-2). Redshirt-freshman 149-pounder Brett Farina (6-6), junior 157-pounder Bobby Ward (3-3), sophomore 174-pounder Quinton Godley (4-5), freshman 184-pounder Jonathan Becker (3-5), freshman 197-pounder Andrew Tumlin (3-4) and freshman heavyweight Eloheim Palma (8-1) split two matches apiece.
Palma, the high school national champion at heavyweight last year, suffered the toughest loss of the afternoon, losing 3-1 in sudden-victory overtime to 14th-ranked Nathan Fernandez.
“Eloheim was in the midst of taking Fernandez down in the overtime and made a mistake and went down the wrong way,” Jordan said. “Fernandez took advantage and got the takedown, but Eloheim wrestled him even for almost 10 minutes.”
Shull, the high school national champion at 135 pounds last spring, took a 13-5 major decision from Oklahoma City’s John Lynch, then pinned Richard Immel of Oklahoma at 1:47 of the first period.
